Now you can use Google Drive to backup your WhatsApp photos, videos, and chats

WhatsApp integrated Google Drive allowing Android users to backup chats, photos, videos, and voice messages in Google Drive.

This would be a helpful feature on WhatsApp to backup your data from WhatsApp and in case, anything goes wrong with your device your data would be safe with Google Drive.

Backup WhatsApp chats to Google Drive

WhatsApp recommends using WiFi connection when backing up your chats with Google Drive, as large backup files may consume your mobile data. Uploading large backup files might cause you additional charges on your data usage.

Below are the instructions on how to use Google Drive with WhatsApp.

How to backup your WhatsApp chats to Google Drive

  1. In your WhatsApp.
  2. Go to Menu Button > Settings > Chats and calls > Chat backup.
  3. Tap on Back up to Google Drive, and select how frequently you want to backup your chats.
  4. Then you will be prompted to select your Google account. If in case you do not have a Google account, just tap Add account when prompted.
  5. Tap on Back up over to select the network you want to use for backup. It is best to backup over WiFi as recommended, since large backups might cause extra charges on mobile data.
    In case you want to backup to Google Drive manually:
  1. In your WhatsApp.
  2. Go to Menu Button > Settings > Chats and calls > Chat backup.
  3. Tap on Back up to Google Drive, and select backup frequency as Never.
  4. Then tap on Back Up to start backing up to Google Drive.

How to restore your WhatsApp chats from Google Drive

When restoring chats from Google Drive, make sure you are using the same phone number and Google account you used when creating the backup. Also make sure the same Google account has been added to your device.

    Follow the steps below to backup your chats from Google Drive:
  1. Install a fresh copy of WhatsApp.
  2. Upon verification of your phone number, you will be automatically prompted to restore your messages and other media such as photos and videos from Google Drive.
  3. After the completion of restore, just tap Next and your chats will be displayed upon initialization.
  4. After restoring chats, WhatsApp will then automatically restore your media files.

According to Google, this feature will start rolling out to users today, and will reach every WhatsApp user within few months. Just keep an eye on your WhatsApp settings to check if the feature is available to you.
